Sedentary Lifestyle And Its Health Risks

Image
It is a well established fact that sitting for extended periods of time can be bad for personal health. Global studies show that on average we sit 7.7 hours a day. Whereas some studies have found that a large number of people sit up to 15 hours a day. The problem only gets worse with age. Adults 60 years and older spend between 8.5 to 9.6 hours a day in sedentary time. The researchers have found that even if we exercise regularly, prolonged sedentary time could negatively impact the health of our heart and blood vessels. Moreover, a sedentary lifestyle may also be associated with an increased risk of diabetes, impaired insulin sensitivity and a higher risk of death from any cause. The exact mechanisms behind the ill-effects aren't yet clear. Some experts theorize that more sitting leads to reductions in insulin sensitivity, while others believe net calorie expenditures decline as sitting increases. The specific guidelines recommend that for every 30 consecutive minutes of

Environmental Health & Wellness

Image
Environmental health is often the most neglected part of our health as it is also the newest recognized part of the human health. Environmental health is the effects of our civilization, culture, personal habits, pollution, population growth, and travel on human health. It is a new science that measures a variety of factors leading to acquired and congenital diseases. Congenital diseases are caused by genetic defects or factors that harm fetal development. Examples of Environmental Health Concerns: Food management is a major concern which not only includes the fertilizers and pesticides used in the growth of plants but the growth hormones and type of process used with meat. Birth defeats have been linked back to these exact things. Water quality is to make sure there is proper drainage to control stagnate water. Stagnate water attracts mosquitoes which carries and spreads disease. The other aspect is the purification of water for drinking, water to cook and irrigate crops.

Positivism, Not Medicine, Makes The Man

Image
As human beings, we are continually faced with challenges, difficulties and temporary setbacks. They are an unavoidable aspect of being human. By learning how to manage stress and respond with a positive attitude to each challenge, we'll grow as a person and start moving forward in life. In fact, without those setbacks, we could not learn what we need to know and develop the qualities to where we are today. It is natural for us to react emotionally when our expectations are frustrated in any way. When something we wanted and hoped for fails to materialize, we feel a temporary sense of disappointment and unhappiness. The optimistic person, however, knows how to manage stress in difficult situations and soon moves beyond this disappointment. Responding quickly to the adverse event and interpreting it as being temporary, the optimist responds with a positive attitude, knows how to manage stress and counter the negative feelings. Whenever you have a difficulty, immediately refra

Do you really need to stop drinking on antibiotics?

Image
You've snagged yourself a sinus infection or are battling a bout of strep throat... complete with that daggers-puncturing-your-tonsils feeling. Of course, it comes at the worst time ever (because, when doesn’t it?) and you’re also prepping for your best friend’s wedding/a holiday party/some fancy get-together where alcohol will be present. You’ve heard it before: Consuming alcohol while taking antibiotics is bad. But one little sip (or 12) really won’t be a life-ruiner, right? Not so fast with the champagne there, friend. First, it's important to remember why you’re on antibiotics to begin with: You feel awful and, with some help from your prescription, your body is working to fight off a nasty bacterial infection. (Antibiotics cannot treat anything viral, like a flu.) Basically, antibiotics kill the bacteria that can give you a sore throat, make your ear ache, and spike your temperatures. And, while drinking alcohol won’t reduce how effectively antibiotics make that ha

FDA Warns Biotin May Interfere With Lab Tests, Including Troponin

Susan Jeffrey SILVER SPRING, MD — The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that biotin, or vitamin B7, can interfere with the results of laboratory testing, including troponin testing for diagnosis of MI "Biotin in blood or other samples taken from patients who are ingesting high levels of biotin in dietary supplements can cause clinically significant incorrect lab test results," the FDA says in a statement. "The FDA has seen an increase in the number of reported adverse events, including one death, related to biotin interference with lab tests." The supplement may cause falsely high or falsely low results depending on the test, leading to inappropriate patient management or misdiagnosis, the agency notes. "For example, a falsely low result for troponin, a clinically important biomarker to aid in the diagnosis of heart attacks, may lead to a missed diagnosis and potentially serious clinical implications," the statement notes. "The FDA

Also referred to as atopic dermatitis, eczema is normally an inflammatory reaction of the skin which can be a serious source of discomfort in infants and even adults. While DNA has been implicated in many cases of eczema, other contributing factors include sweating, poor hygiene, stress and contact with chemicals and plants. Eczema development has also been associated with some food allergies such as eggs, milk from cow, soy products, nuts etc. Although these foods may not be directly linked to eczema development, they may, however, trigger a flare up and worsen the condition. Maintaining an eczema free skin is usually achieved with proper skin care and improved nutrition. Below are tips to maintain a healthy skin while preventing eczema and itchy skin development: 1. Fish consumption Foods high in anti-inflammatory activity go a long way in curbing eczema development and one of those is fatty fish such as herring and salmon. Omega-3-fatty acids, with appreciable contents in fis

Getting it Right

At times we eat for the right reasons. When we are hungry is the first example that comes to mind. As simple as it sounds, you may be surprised by how often people eat when they think they are hungry when it is a craving instead. Since we are naturally inclined to make mistakes, there are also times where we eat for the wrong reasons. An extreme craving is worth noting. More importantly, the most anxious moments are when we eat out of boredom or worse; when we seek comfort in food. We have all been there, so you are not alone. But if you are still guilty of doing this from time to time, it is time to make some changes. Emotional eating is not healthy. It is dangerous. You begin to lose control the moment you start. Predictably, those who eat for emotional reasons also tend to develop health problems. Type 2 diabetes and obesity are two common consequences of emotional eating since it often leads to weight gain and high blood sugar readings. If you seek comfort in food, it is t

Danger Amidst Feeling Good

Music is wonderful when listened to in the right manner. Many, however, turn the volume up to an extraordinary level because they want to hear it above the background noise, or because the thumping of the rhythm makes them feel good. Whatever the cause of it, loud music is extremely damaging to the ears. Usually it is not until one gets older that the problems start and they can be quite horrendous. The worst thing is tinnitus that generates constant ringing or noise in the nerves that is not related to anything in the environment. It is a malfunction of the hearing mechanism and the main cause is loud noise. This can be from chain saws; music; drills; machinery; rock concerts; and so on. Soldiers are also at risk of developing tinnitus because of the guns they had to use. It is doubtful whether they would be compensated for this condition when it occurs after they leave the service. People who work with loud noise are risking their hearing and many do not know it. While it is

Many times when a person hears the words "substance abuse" they only think in the terms using drugs, both legal prescriptions and illegal, excessively but it can also include alcohol. It is often seen as an illness or medical condition that will require treatment. Using therapy is one type of treatment that could be effective. Therapy can be either individual or done in a group. During therapy they learn how to identify any destructive behavior that causes then to have this problem. They also learn how to avoid these behaviors. One way to do this is to practice positive behavior using role-playing sessions. They also learn how to use a support system. Therapy for substance abuse addiction is generally aimed at help you work through denial because many deny that they have a substance abuse problem. They deny that there is nothing wrong with their behavior and that they can stop at anytime on their own using the substance they are addicted too. Unfortunately, this is gener

Just How Safe Are You?

Image
Most of the learned population feel completely safe in their sexual relations when they use condoms. Most of the data available on internet and elsewhere claim that condoms are an effective protection against HIV/AIDS. However, the under-informed masses are unaware of the fact that condoms do not provide protection against a number of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) like herpes, HPV, syphilis, pubic lice, or scabies. They spread through skin to skin genital contact. Even if no fluid exchange occurs, these STIs may spread easily and can produce a life threatening condition, no where less threatening than the much hyped HIV, which make the immune system weak to the fatal extent. HIV weakens the immune system by lowering the number of T-Lymphocytes. The normal range of T- Lymphocyte is 500 to 1500 which drops below 200 due to HIV infection. This makes the immune system weak enough for any other pathogen to attack the body and cause secondary infection. Usually, the patient dies

Better DM Improves Health

Disease management is a structure that is designed to improve a person's health with coordinated interventions from health care providers and where self-care efforts may be implemented. Disease management empowers an individual, who is working with the health care providers to manage (and prevent) his/her disease. It is designed to help an individual improve their health with any chronic condition and to reduce the costs associated with avoidable complications, like an emergency room visit and hospitalizations. Disease management includes the following actions: Identifying patients' affected by the disease. Determining the most effective ways to treat the disease. It is more like population-based-care or continuous health care improvement. If properly designed, it works on prevention of complications as well as treatment of chronic conditions. Conditions most commonly chosen for disease management are Asthma, cardiovascular diseases, Coronary artery

Sulphur And Your Health

Image
Books have been written on this product which, to many, is a mystery but its health benefits can be amazing. It is Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane or Organic Sulphur. It is claimed to have tremendous value for a wide variety of physical conditions. This article goes through some of them but because of the amount of information it cannot cover everything. To begin with let's look at some of its properties. Minerals are not readily absorbed by the body and no plant manufactures them. That is why they are mined. Plants absorb them, however, and take up sulphur from the soil, which is essential for their growth. When bound to carbon in the plant the body absorbs them. It is important to note that vitamins cannot function without minerals. That means eating a wide variety of foods and supplements to stay healthy. Humans get MSM from fresh vegetables, meat, fresh fruits, and seafood. Heat applied to these products along with the processing involved in today's supermarket food reduces

If you have recently been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, you may feel like your head is spinning. The more the doctor tells you, the harder it is to absorb. Chances are your doctor has given you an outline of what you should eat and which foods you need to avoid, talked to you about setting up appointments to see an endocrinologist, a registered dietitian, a podiatrist, and a diabetes educator, depending on your specific needs. You may be fortunate and not need to take any diabetes medications at this time as research has proven changes in lifestyle - changes that anyone can make - have enormous power to prevent and to help treat Type 2 diabetes. In that case, your doctor will advise you to follow a healthy eating plan and start moving more to lower your blood sugar, lose weight and stop diabetes and its complications in their tracks. Regardless of how many medical people you need to see, the reality is you will need to empower yourself. Empowerment involves your choice to take c

"DOWN" Isn't The End Of Days

Image
John Langdon Down was a British doctor who was the first to fully describe a syndrome that would eventually bear his name. This was back in 1866 but even before that scientists and doctors had described some aspects of Down Syndrome as early as 1838. This affliction is not new, it has been around since time began and today it is the most common of the genetic abnormalities. Down Syndrome is also called Trisomy 21 because it is a mutation on the 21st set of human chromosomes, usually an added portion on one strand or a whole strand unto itself. This is thought to happen when the 21st chromosome fails to separate from either the egg or the sperm cell so that cell now carries an extra copy on to the next phase of development. It is estimated that eighty eight percent of cases are caused by the egg failing to separate properly, while only eight percent happen on the sperm side of the equation. The other three percent happens sometime after the egg and sperm have merged. Since chromo

One of the latest health trends is the Detox Cleanse. They claim to detoxify your body by flushing out toxins, while giving you more energy, making you feel less bloated and help regulate bowel movement. So why the controversy? Some detox cleanses suggest fasting during the cleanse. Which is basically just another way to starve yourself to lose weight. Starving yourself may "shock" your system into losing weight but it is not the safest or healthiest way to lose weight and keep it off. It is essentially a crash diet which often leads to quickly regaining the weight and sometimes putting on even more than you lost. Fasting also lowers your metabolism making it difficult to burn calories while starving your body of necessary nutrients. Some common side effects of using a Detox Cleanse and fasting include irritability, headaches, fatigue and difficulty thinking clearly. There are healthier ways to lose weight (even quickly) without starving. Eating a well balanced l

Stress is not always recognized as a life-threatening issue and many times not realized by the medical profession. Although, stress is one of the hidden things in some cases, people are having it without realizing immediately. Stress is dangerous for our overall health. These are two of the most common problems that can target a person - stress and anxiety - that also can develop into depression. There are the odd times when a little bit of stress is a good thing when it gets us up for competition. However, at other times when stress is too much it can lead to withdrawal or fear, where anxiety and depression gets hold of. Water and Oral Health

Image
Water makes up 60% of your body, including 70% of your heart and brain and 80% of your lungs. As such, your body needs adequate amount of water to function efficiently and properly. Both doctors and dentists recommend that their patients drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. The Health Benefits of Water The overall and dental health benefits of water are significant and many. Those who drink the adequate amount of water have a healthy body weight, can think clearer, stay focused better, feel better, have more energy, and have clearer skin. Their mouths are also healthier, with a reduced risk of tooth decay, gum disease, dry mouth and bad breath. Good health is something we all want and strive to attain, but if we're honest, most of us don't come close to drinking the recommended amount each day. We try to make up for the deficiency of water intake by emphasizing a healthy diet and exercise. While good diet and exercise are important and necessary for good hea

VVF and Urinary Incontinence in Women

Image
United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in partnership with Federal Ministry of Health and Ministry of Women Affairs has estimated that about 160,000 to 200,000 women develop Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF) every year. Vesicovaginal Fistula and Rectovaginal Fistula (RVF) are holes resulting from the breakdown in the tissue between the vaginal wall and the bladder or rectum caused by unrelieved obstruction during labour causing continuous involuntary discharge of urine (urinary incontinence). The consequences related to these conditions may also include dermatitis, erosion of the skin and other tissues in the vulva and vagina with constant leaking of urine and faeces. Also, in extreme cases, nerves at the lower limbs can be damaged which may lead to loss of coordination. Historically, cases of VVF date back to the earliest existence of humans. It was an especially rampant problem between the 17th and 19th centuries in much of what is now the developed world. In fact,

Childhood obesity is a serious medical problem. Children, who are obese, often end up developing major health problems later in life. In addition, they usually have low self-esteem, body image issues, and suffer from depression. Symptoms Of Childhood Obesity It is important to realize that not all children who have a few extra pounds are obese. Some kids tend to have larger body frames and each child has different amount of body fat at different development stages. Hence, it will not be possible to look at your child and determine that they are obese or overweight. In your efforts to build muscle and to look good, you must have heard a lot about nutritional food, supplements and exercises but not much about the need for quality sleep. Sleep has a direct link to muscle gain as it promotes the release of human growth hormone (HGH) which is needed for protein synthesis. Often, we do not realize that we may not be getting the minimum eight hours of sound sleep needed to get the maximum benefits from our muscle building efforts. Hand, phone and computer usage, food additives, stress and advancing age have a bearing on the duration and quality of sleep we get. This in turn make our quest to build muscle and look good more challenging. Briefly, the sleep process consists of repeated cycles of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) of approximately 90 minutes per cycle. NREM consists of three stages including the slow wave sleep, which can be regarded as deep sleep when the body is least metabolically active. REM on the other h
