NGO advocates for Family Planning to reduce Maternal Death

An NGO, “Pathfinder International’’says family planning and child birth spacing remain the best way to tackle the alarming rate of maternal mortality in the country.

The programme officer of the group, Dr Sakina Bello disclosed this during an interactive session on PMA2020 Round 4 Survey results with journalists on Friday Kaduna.

Bello said that recent research indicator and survey showed that high maternal mortality cases in the country could be prevented through commitment to family planning and childbirth spacing.

She said that recent researches have showed that maternal mortality cases could be reduce by almost one third in the country if family planning method was adopted.

“We are not telling people to have only one child, we are saying they should practice child spacing.

“Northern Nigeria for instance, has more of the issues as a result of polygamy and inheritance,”Bello said in her opening remarks.

She noted that the 60 year old NGO, working in several countries around the world, was poised to address such issues that affect reproductive health.

According to her, the organisation would collaborate with CSOs to prevail on governments to increase budgetary allocations to family planning.

Also speaking at the occasion, Chairman, Family Health Advocates in Nigeria Initiative (FHANI), Malam Mohammed Shehu said Performance Monitoring and Accountability (PMA) Round 4 was to identify key advocacy issues.

Shehu underscored the importance of information sharing in addressing several issues of maternal mortality in the country.

He said that exchanging useful information was key in the changing world trend in the health sector.

He believed that information exchange assists media practitioners in their fields of operation and in development communication.

“The objectives are to share results of PMA Round 4 Survey with journalists in Kaduna, to help apply it in media reportage, foster and enhance relationship between FHANI and the media.

Shehu said the interactive session was targeted at identifying key advocacy issues arising from the PMA results. (NAN)
